In northern Sinai, Egypt, in mid-October, militants attacked a military checkpoint in the town of Hasna, killing 12 officers and injuring six others. During the attack, 15 militants were killed. Egyptian officials blamed Daesh for the attack. On Oct. 23, air strikes by the Egyptian Air Force against Daesh targets in Sinai, near the border with Gaza, are believed to have killed 70 militants.

A civil war in Yemen between the internationally recognized government, assisted by a coalition of Arabian states, and Houthi rebels, an ethnic group from northern Yemen, has been taking place since September 2014.

A passenger train traveling from Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé, to the port city of Douala derailed on Oct. 21, killing at least 80 people and injuring more than 600. An investigation found that the train was going at an “unusually high speed” at the time of the derailment.

Heavy rains caused a landslide to engulf a major highway outside of the Colombian city of Medellín on Oct. 26, killing at least six people. No date had been set for the reopening of the highway.

Strong earthquakes rocked central Italy in October. Two earthquakes occurred on Oct. 26, the first measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale and the second, 6.1, both centered near the town of Visso, located 45 miles east of the epicenter of the Aug. 24 earthquake in Umbria. Antigovernment protests took place nationwide in Venezuela on Oct. 26, with hundreds of thousands of people in the streets, after the nation’s highest court declared invalid a petition to hold a recall election of President Nicolas Maduro. The court said that the petition, which garnered 1.8 million signatures, was “marred by fraud.” During the protests, one police officer was killed, at least 20 civilians were injured and more than 80 people were arrested.
