In Ankara, Turkey, a high-speed passenger train collided with another vehicle and then an overpass at a train station on Dec. 13, killing at least nine people and injuring 47. The train, traveling southeast from Ankara to Konya, was carrying more than 200 passengers. The vehicle it struck was doing a track inspection at the time.

While crossing Denmark's Great Belt Bridge during a storm on Jan. 2, a commuter train traveling from the city of Odense to Copenhagen was struck by debris from a freight train, which reportedly ripped the side off of one car and caused it to brake suddenly, killing eight passengers and injuring 14 others.

The Russian Coast Guard opened fire on three Ukrainian naval ships near Crimea, the peninsula at the south of Ukraine, on Nov. 26, eventually capturing the ships and detaining their crews, all to international condemnation. At least six Ukrainians were injured. Crimea, almost universally recognized as part of Ukraine, was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Two car bombs were detonated outside of a hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Nov. 9, killing at least 22 people. A third bomb, in a tuk-tuk, was set off shortly afterward nearby, with no casualties reported. The hotel is near the headquarters of Somalia's Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

A covert Israeli military operation within the borders of Gaza on Nov. 11 resulted in the deaths of seven Hamas militants, including a commander. One Israeli soldier was also killed. Fighting between the two groups broke out when the car carrying the Israelis was stopped by Hamas security. In Melbourne, Australia, on Nov. 9, a man armed with a knife set fire to a car and then stabbed three pedestrians, killing one. The man was then shot and killed by police. Police are treating the attack as an act of terrorism. Authorities identified the attacker as being a Somali-born naturalized citizen and said that family members of his were on a watch list, though he, himself, was not.

Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Toraji caused landslides in south-central Vietnam on Nov. 18, killing at least 13 people. The landslides occurred in mountain villages that surround the coastal city of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa province.
