At least 100 people went missing off the coast of Libya after a boat packed with refugees capsized on May 25. From that boat, 562 people were rescued. At least 550 are missing from a boat that capsized on May 26 after leaving Libya. On May 31, the US State Department warned of the risk of terrorist attacks throughout Europe at major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation hubs. Possible targets included the EURO soccer tournament (June 10-July 10) and the Tour de France (July 2-24), both being held in locations throughout France, and World Youth Day in Kraków, Poland (with events July 26-31). This alert will expire on Aug. 31.

A series of bombings in government-held cities in Syria killed 101 people on May 23. 

In the city of Tartus, a suicide bomber targeted a bus station, and minutes later a car bomb was detonated at the same location. In the city of Jableh, bombs were set off at multiple locations, including a hospital, a bus stop and a power station. The Islamist militant group Daesh (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the bombs.

Iraqi forces made gains against the Islamist militant group Daesh (ISIL) in late May during a campaign to retake the city of Fallujah, Iraq. 

Fallujah, which has been held by Daesh since 2014, is one of the largest cities controlled by Daesh and had a pre-war population of more than 300,000. The US Department of State warns of ongoing terrorist attacks and violence in Mali. 

On June 1, a Chinese national was killed and at least 12 other people were injured when a car bomb was detonated at a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission camp near the northern city of Gao. In a separate attack within the city, one French national and two Malians were killed. No group has claimed responsibility for either attack.

Gunmen attacked a hotel in central Mogadishu, Somalia, on June 1, killing at least 10 people, including two members of Somalia’s Parliament, and wounding more than 50. The attack was preceded by a car bomb that destroyed the hotel’s façade. 

The Islamist militant group al-Shabaab took credit for the attack. Al-Shabaab controls large areas of southern Somalia, though Mogadishu and its environs are controlled by the government.

At least four civilians were killed and 15 wounded during an artillery shelling at a checkpoint between rebel- and government-controlled areas in the town of Olenivka in rebel-held eastern Ukraine on April 27. The Ukrainian military denied responsibility for the attack.

On May 30, near Donetsk, five Ukrainian soldiers were killed by pro-Russian rebels, four in an ambush and another when his vehicle hit a mine. During the ambush, two rebels were also killed.
