“Wow! They’ve cloned Ricardo Montalbán,” my wife, Sharon, exclaimed the first time we emerged from our hotel onto the streets of Santiago’s upscale Providencia area.

My first impression, too, was that there were a lot of strikingly good-looking Chilean men and women, and anyone under the age of three was absolutely too cute for words.

Adding to their good looks, the citizens of Chile’s capital were extremely well dressed. Even more striking was...

If you are in the market for a new car and are considering a vacation to Europe, you might consider buying a car with overseas delivery. In the last week of September ’07, my wife and I purchased a 2008 Mercedes-Benz and drove through southern Germany, Switzerland and France, then spent some time on the island of Corsica.

Getting started

While we purchased a Mercedes, similar programs are also available from Audi, BMW, Volvo and...

Welcome to the Sepik. Please set your watches back 900 years.

Greg Stathakis, a retired Santa Barbara high school teacher, has led groups to Papua New Guinea for each of the past 28 years. My older son, Billy, and I joined him in May ’07 for the trip of a lifetime.

A bit of history

Looking for some royal treatment on your next trip overseas? What better place to be treated like a royal than London, where they’ve been perfecting the art of luxury for centuries?

A quick check found that an apartment was available for the three...

Many years ago I spent quite a bit of time at either end of North Africa — in Morocco and Egypt — but the countries in between had always eluded me. Finally, in May ’07, I visited Tunisia, with Vantage Deluxe World Travel (Boston, MA; 800/322-6677). While the company’s phone system was diabolical and their customer service needed a lot of improvement, the tour itself went very smoothly and was memorable for the sights and experiences.

As we crossed the border from Turkey into Bulgaria, our guide, Borut Sraj, a 55-year-old Slovenian who wore a tiny flute around his neck to alert laggards when the bus was leaving, advised us, “The country may or may not work for you, but take it as it comes.”

It was sound advice for those whose European travels focused mainly on France, Italy, Spain and other countries in the western part of the continent. My wife, Barbara, and I had been in...

During the last week of July ’07, I visited four prefectures of the Chubu region, Japan’s geographic center. The Chubu region has Japan’s fourth-largest city, Nagoya; majestic mountains and ski resorts, including Nagano of the XVIII Winter Olympics; gorgeous forests; rice paddies, tea plantations and orchards; cattle ranches; amazing hot springs; the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, and stunning examples of Japan’s heritage. Chubu is Japan in...
