Over the years, I’ve heard friends talk about how fabulous Turkey is, but I never gave a visit there much thought. After my travel buddy, Kathy, happened to suggest it when we couldn’t decide where in the world we wanted to go next, we began searching out any information we could find. The more we discovered, the more excited we got, and soon we knew we had to take a trip to Turkey.

Planning the trip

We spend a tremendous amount of...

Most travelers head for foreign parts to explore and learn things they didn’t know before. Those of us who joined Viking River Cruises’ “Footsteps of the Cossacks” river trip from Odessa to Kiev (Oct. 6-17, 2010) learned a great deal about a country that is relatively little visited: Ukraine.

The second-largest country in Eastern Europe, Ukraine is also one of the oldest. As we cruised the Dnieper River northward from Odessa to the capital, Kiev, we...

It was a short flight, by overseas standards, from Boston to Reykjavík and we arrived near the crack of dawn. After passing through what amounted to virtually no Customs check at all, we were met by a taxi driver holding a sign with our name on it.

Someone once said that life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the places and moments that take our breath away.

Geographic Expeditions, my favorite tour company, arranged a private trip for my friend Thelma and me to Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia) which took my breath away many times.

A great beginning

However, those plans were drastically altered when I received a phone call from American Airlines early the morning before, informing me that our flight was canceled due to equipment failure!

After reviewing...

My husband, Joe, and I went to Xi’an, China, with Global Volunteers in 2002 for one of our most unforgettable vacations. For two weeks we stayed in a hotel with 16 other volunteers and each weekday we went to a large school to help with their English program.

In October 2010 we again traveled with Global Volunteers to a special place, this time visiting Rarotonga, in the Cook Islands, with 14 other volunteers ranging in age from their 20s to...

We were inspired by Beth Habian’s article in the September ’09 issue about her trip to the Dordogne region of France — so much so that we immediately contacted George Nevin, the owner/operator of Intimate France, to ask about his 2010 tour of Normandy and the Loire Valley. We were pleased with his prompt and informative responses to our inquiries, so we booked the 12-day tour departing Sept. 12.

In August 2010 I began an unforgettable safari with Nomad Adventure Tours. This 42-day journey began in Cape Town, South Africa, taking our group to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and on to Nairobi, Kenya — a total distance of 6,600 miles.
