 (Second of three parts)

The second stage of my August 2015 Scandinavian adventure began with a drive from coastal Bergen into the heart of Norway’s enthralling fjord region. I was journeying, partially hosted, with a group of 38 intrepid travelers on the 12-day “Scandinavian Explorer” tour offered by smarTours (New York, NY; 800/337-7773 or 212/297-0955, www.smartours.com).

Upon our arrival at the hamlet of Voss, we boarded an express train for...

Dear Globetrotter:

Welcome to the 479th issue of your monthly foreign travel magazine.

Twelve days after 224 people were killed on a Russian passenger jet downed over Egypt on Oct. 31, 43 were killed in suicide bombings in a neighborhood in Lebanon, and the very next day the same terrorist group attacked in Paris, killing 130 people who were simply enjoying a Friday evening out. These were tragic crimes, and the grieving continues.

In October 2015 I was able to check off one of the adventures on my bucket list: to travel through the waterways and canals of the northeastern US and southeastern Canada.

Used by Native Americans, explorers, settlers and armies, the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes were key to the development of the Canadian provinces of Québec and Ontario as well as New York state and the interior of the United States.

My fundamental cause is that good travel teaches people to better understand the world they live in.

In order to be a good teacher, I need to be a good student. That’s why I frequently...

(Part 3 of 3 on central Mexico)

Querétaro is one of a trio of colonial cities that are the jewels of an area of central Mexico called the Bajío. Located north of Mexico City, these three cities — San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and Querétaro — were the focus of a lengthy visit to the Bajío that my husband, Paul, and I made in the winter of 2015. We rented a house in San Miguel for a month (Nov. ’15, pg. 54) and made multiday excursions to the other two cities....

Scandinavia finally edged its way to the top of my travel bucket list in August 2015 when the Fates presented an opportunity to travel to Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

With an energetic group of 38 savvy explorers, I participated in a 12-day “Scandinavian Explorer” highlights tour, partially hosted by both Finnair and New York-based smarTours (800/337-7773 or 212/297-0955, www.smartours.com).

Dear Globetrotter

Each month in this magazine, we present a number of articles and letters written by our subscribers, people who travel outside of the US for fun, adventure or just because.
