In Sept/Oct 2013 I cruised for 20 days from St. Petersburg to Rostov-on-Don on the M/S Litvinov. We did not stop at Moscow on our way south but did stop in Astrakhan. I had a great time and particularly enjoyed visiting Yaroslavl, Nizhni Novgorod, Samara, Saratov and Astrakhan. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.
