Hungary protests
This item appears on page 55 of the February 2019 issue.
In protests that started Dec. 15, tens of thousands of people gathered in Budapest, Hungary, against a labor law that increased the amount of unpaid overtime that businesses could require their employees to work. Protesters were further enflamed when opposition politicians were forcibly ejected from the state-run news organization by security when they tried to go on the air to speak about the proposal.
Despite the outcry, the law was signed by Hungary's president on Dec. 20, causing protests to continue into January.
