Brown lemur.

On our visit to Surin, Thailand, during the Elephant Roundup (third week in November), we noticed an elephant-mounting platform in the parking lot of our hotel. These platforms were located in several places around town, including the train station. I immediately went for a ride (about $3 for 20 minutes). It was great, although if I had realized I would need to duck under some overhead wires, I wouldn’t have picked the tallest elephant. — DORIS NEILSON, Avoca, MI

On one of many trails (lovely FLAT trails!) at Réserve Priveé de Berenty in Madagascar, we came face to face with brown lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs and the beautiful Verreaux’s sifaka, a snow-white lemur with a black face and ears and a bit of brown on the top of its head. Extremely nimble and graceful as it swings through the trees, on the ground it performs a comical 2-legged hop-jump step when it covers open terrain — quite a sight! — KATHY COOPER, St. Clair Shores, MI
