Switzerland's Hotel de la Paix

My husband, David, and I have stayed 12 times at Hotel de la Paix (Bernastrasse 24, 3800 Interlaken, SWITZERLAND; phone +41 33 822 70 44, fax 822 87 28 or visit www. hotel-de-la-paix.ch), most recently in August ’06.

This charming and intimate hotel, located in a residential street only three minutes’ walk from the West Station, is owned and operated by George and Gillian Etterli. The friendly hosts keep the hotel in immaculate condition, and many guests return year after year to experience the gracious hospitality and relaxing atmosphere of this lovely property away from the busy main street.

The hotel is extremely comfortable and tastefully furnished. There are two lounges and a small garden area for guests to enjoy. There are also an elevator and an ice machine. The rooms each have a phone and TV.

Room rates vary according to the season and room features, such as whether or not a room has a balcony or whether the bath has a shower or tub. Double/twin rooms in high season, June 24-Sept. 9 in 2007, cost CHF160-200 ($129-$161). This includes a generous buffet breakfast with orange juice, individual pots of freshly brewed coffee or tea, muesli with fresh fruit, cereals, cheeses and meats plus a variety of breads.

If you prepay for your evening meals, you’ll receive the best 4-course dinners you could find anywhere in Interlaken for just CHF28 ($22) each per person. During our 12-day stay, not one course was ever repeated!

We are passionate about the Bernese Oberland, and we recommend Hotel de la Paix to complete the perfect Swiss experience.

Travel tip — ask Gillian about the Berner Oberland Regional Pass, which covers the entire Bernese Oberland. (The Berner Oberland Regional Pass covers travel by train, boat, gondola or funicular. In 2007, a 7-day pass costs CHF200 [$205] and a 15-day pass, CHF265 [$246]. It can be purchased in the Bernese Oberland at train stations, tourist offices and travel agencies or online at www.myswissalps.com/regionalrailpasses.)
