Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury Hotel and Majestic Roof Garden Hotel in Adelaide

Here are two hotels from our June ’05 trip to Adelaide, AUSTRALIA.

Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury Hotel (2 Flinders St., Adelaide, S.A. 5000, Australia; phone [08] 8112 0000, fax 8112 0199 or visit www.medinaapartments.com.au).

Located in the heart of the city, this 5-star property was the highlight accommodation of our trip. In a 163-year-old bank building, our one-bedroom apartment was a classic mix of old woodwork and contemporary designer furniture. Great beds. A washer and dryer in our bathroom. A fabulously relaxing hotel pool. And a fine restaurant.

Two couples could easily stay over and split the cost, which is surprisingly low. 2006 rates start at Aus$315 (US$239) per night for a one-bedroom. (Discounts available when booking online.)

• Majestic Roof Garden Hotel (55 Frome St., Adelaide, S.A. 5000, Australia; phone [08] 8100 4400, fax 8100 4488 or visit www.majestic hotels.com.au).

Located in the heart of the city, this 4.5-star hotel has a lovely garden on the roof, where you can bring a bottle of wine and sip it as you overlook the vineyards of Penfolds Winery.

The rooms have a Zen-like feel, with Japanese screens connecting the rooms to the bathrooms, which feature huge soaking tubs. Nice detail in the design plus hardwood floors and an excellent staff made this a great place to stay. I would return.

2006 rates start at Aus$312 (US$236) per room per night. (Check online discounts on website.)
