Independent travel in China

<p>I&#39;m going to spend three weeks with a young Chinese national traveling, starting in Beijing. &nbsp;We will travel by bus and train. &nbsp;Any suggestions as to places to visit&nbsp;other than in &nbsp;Beijing? &nbsp;Thanks!!</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

My husband and I spent 6 weeks in China.  We loved South China. It is still more traditional, and there are less tourists.  We also did the Silk Road, which was an entirely different feel.
