Hotel suggestions Barcelona and Venice

❮ Back To Message Board
We are taking a cruise leaving from Barcelona and ending in Venice. We have been to both cities before (and love them both!) but stayed in rented apartments. This time we will spend 3 nights in Barcelona pre-cruise and would like suggestions for reasonably priced (eg. under $175/nt.) hotels near the port but in a quiet location. We stayed in Gracia last time, but that is a bit too far this time. We will spend 2 nights in Venice post-cruise and would like suggestions for reasonably priced (eg. under $175/nt.) hotels that are walking distance from Piazzale Roma where we catch the bus for the airport. Preferably no, or no more than 2, bridges, as we will have luggage.

We used this hotel in 2011 after a cruise. It was within walking distance from the cruise terminal.

Boat / Plane
The cruise ship shuttle buses and the buses of the ATVO transportation company departing from the airports of Venice "Marco Polo" and Treviso "Canova" all stop at piazzale Roma, a short distance away from Hotel Arlecchino. Alternatively, take a water taxi that will take you directly to the hotel, or from the Airport of Venice, get on bus n. 5 of the ACTV heading for piazzale Roma.

With a short walk you can reach piazzale Roma from the train station of Santa Lucia. The imminent opening of Ponte di Calatrava will allow you to reach the piazzale in 5 minutes. It is also possible to take line 1 of the ferry and get off at Piazzale Roma. From here you will already be able to see the yellow building of Hotel Arlecchino.

Car and Parking
f you arrive by car take highways A4 and A22, exit at Venezia Mestre and follow the directions for Venezia. Leave your vehicle in one of the paying car parks of piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. Hotel Arlecchino is a short ways from the car park. It is also possible, through the hotel, to reserve a parking space at the Garage San Marco.

for Barcelona: Take a look agt the Hotel Gaudi ( if you are a Gaudi fan. Request a “superior double” category room with view of Palau Guell, on the 5th floor of the hotel (the 6th floor has a bar and jacuzzi.
Several rooms have terraces with straight-on views of Palau Guell’s roof filled with Gaudi’s whimsical  chimneys and sculptures.

This is an older hotel, soundproofing is not that great, but it has good wi-fi and a nice breakfast.

In general, the hotels location is excellent. Just half a block in from Las Ramblas, and a few minutes walk to the Columbus Statue.

In Venice, I like the hotel AnticheFigure ( which is right across the canal from the Santa Lucia train station. Request a DeLuxe category room with a view of the Canal. Activity on the canal can be a little noisy during the day, but it quiets down at night. Looking at the canal is like being in a Canaletto painting. Their breakfasts are wonderful and staff is very friendly and helpful. It is also walking distance to the cruise terminal and they will call a porter to move your luggage
