Dubai

We will be spending 2 days in Dubai next January. Would appreciate suggestions on guides and sites.

I spent a day in Dubai on the way to Sri Lanka in March 2011. Since I only had one day, I wanted to see as much as possible. So I used the hop on hop off bus. It was a good way to see a lot and included admission to the Dubai Museum, a guided tour of the old town, including the gold and spice souks, a dhow ride and many other options, which I couldn't fit in. I spent most of the day in the old town. I really enjoyed the museum and a stroll around the Bastakiya area, where I had lunch. A walk along the creek was also very interesting, with the dhows loaded with merchandise. And the abra ride across the creek was fun. I had one ride included in the souk walk, but since I wanted to have lunch back in Bastakiya, I got to experience it without a guide as well.

I don't know what exactly you're interested in. There are a lot of other house museums in the old town that sound interesting. I didn't visit any of the waterparks or go to the beach. The bus did drive us along the coast and stopped for photos of the Burj al Arab, as well as drive up and down the Palm Island.

My hotel was across the street from the Dubai Mall, so I walked thru there, as well as watched the dancing fountains, I had a view of the Burg Khalifa from my hotel room, but I don't necessarily like being in high rise buildings, so I didn't go up to the viewing area. I also didn't make it to the Mall of the Emirates, which is the one with the indoor ski area.
