Dharamshala Tour

I would like to hear the experiences of fellow ITN travelers who have visited northern India on tours that included Dharamshala. Also welcomed would be any advice on the possibility of independent travel in this area of India.

I've been to Dharamshala twice and enjoyed both visits. I recommend you find a company (check past comments on the board) that provides a car/driver and a guide to visit this town and its surroundings. But what I want to mention is that when you visit Dharamshala, stay at Chonor House. This is a lovely accommodation just outside the entrance to the Dalai Lama's temple and is managed by the Dalai Lama's sister. Each room has a name (rather than a number) and is nicely decorated and you can hear the monks chanting from the balconies. It also has a good kitchen with great momos. You need to book early - there are only 12 rooms.

Traveling independent is no problem in this area. But have to be careful that you dont leave your route. There are many travel companies that are providing individual tours. Its better to pay a little bit extra and they will provide you a hasslle free holidays. Enjoy traveling.
