If you will only be entering
If you will only be entering India once (no detours to Nepal or Bhutan) you can get an e-visa. Otherwise you have to get a regular visa. (If that is the case you need to apply through Cox and Kings. You cannot go directly to the Indian government site. Visa agencies forward a regular application to Cox and Kings so you might as well save yourself some money).
You do not need to go to a service to get an e-visa. You can use the following link:
https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html. I had some questions and ended up calling the telephone number in India and they were very helpful
