Trekking Kilimanjaro

Plan on a Kili trek June 2013. Would appreciate any information/thoughts on a trekking company either U.S. based or African. Desire to ascend a more remote trail. Plan on a Tanzania safari after this.

My niece highly recommends Tusker for climbing Kili. Her route was the 12-day Lemosho-Lava Tower Route. In 2008 when she climbed, Tusker was considered to have the best guides on the mountain and the only people medically trained. Apparently, the success rate for climbing Kili is only 25%, but with Tusker it is much higher. www.tusker.com. After the climb, she was fortunate enough to join one of the Tusker Guides for a day's exploration. She really enjoyed the experience since she felt she finally saw the real Africa with the buffer and safety of a local guide.

I just completed a trek to the top of Kilimanjaro and went with G Adventures (www.gadventures.com). They used Zara Tours in Moshi Tanzania. I had a wonderful time and the guides were fabulous. Went up the 6 day rongai route and descended the Marangu route. Rongai is more remote and very pretty. The 6 days route gave us time to acclimate to the altitude. Had a great time!
