Sania’s House Bungalows, Bali

I spent a week in Ubud, Bali, in January ’04 staying at Sania’s House Bungalows (Jalan Karna No. 7, Ubud, 80571 Bali, INDONESIA; phone [0361] 975 535 or e-mail sania_house@yahoo.com).

Mr. and Mrs. Sania and their family are gracious hosts and offer superior accommodations in 21 bungalows. Each bungalow has beautifully carved doors plus tile and beautiful teak furniture within. Four of the bungalows are air-conditioned and the remaining have ceiling fans. All have spacious covered verandas where, on each, a large thermos of hot tea awaits guests in the morning. Once a guest appears on the veranda, one of the young room men come to take a breakfast order, included in the room price.

The grounds are lovely, with tropical plants and a very nice, small swimming pool. My bungalow, No. 3, had a side door that led to the pool only two steps away! If you get hungry while swimming, two nice satay shops are just steps from the bungalows.

Prices vary according to season and amenities: bungalow with fan and cold water, 60,000 rupiahs ($7) in low season and 70,000 in high season; with fan and hot water, 100,000 rupiahs ($12) in low season, 150,000 high season, or with air-conditioning and hot water, 190,000 low, 300,000 ($36) high. A 10% tax is added to each price.

The bungalows are about 200 meters from the main north-south road, Monkey Forest Road, and it’s about that same distance to the daily market and the main east-west road.

Its location and the hospitality of the Sanias make this the best place to stay in Ubud, in my opinion.
