All Aboard » Railpass Q&A
All Aboard, December 2008 issue
Hi, Jay! We are planning a 30-day trip to Europe and plan to use a Eurail pass. We have a few questions. If we use the Global Pass, is the train service good enough that we could tour a lot of things every day like we did in the 1980s with the BritRail Pass or would we end up with a problem like we had in Paris, where it would be difficult to see only one attraction in a day and be able to return to the central location to spend the night? Which countries or regions would be good to see using the Global Pass? Which countries or regions would be best to avoid? ...
Enjoyed meals on Continental
Travelers' Intercom, December 2007 issue
My husband and I flew on Continental Airlines July 15, 2007, from San Francisco to Newark to Copenhagen to board the Crystal Symphony for a cruise around the Baltic Sea. Much to our surprise, the food on the flight was terrific in business/first class. The dinner began with seafood, including a lovely lobster bisque demitasse with ...
Smithsonian Journeys’ Travel Adventures vs. Signature Tours
Travelers' Intercom, November 2007 issue
My husband, George, and I went on a 16-day Smithsonian Journeys tour, “Treasures of Angkor Wat and Vietnam,” March 19-April 3, 2007. The cost was $1,899 each, excluding airfare. Air travel from Thailand to Cambodia; Cambodia to Vietnam; within Vietnam, and from Vietnam to Hong Kong was billed separately and totaled $850 per person. Entry and ...
Across the Russian Federation by train
Travelers' Intercom, January 2007 issue
My wife, Darlene, and I, following a private tour in Mongolia (June ’06, pg. 85), were among a group of 96 people from all over the world who made an incredible private train trip across the Russian Federation along the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway, Aug. 19-31, ’05. We took the railroad’s classic route, westbound from Vladivostok ...

We were among 70 Elderhostel travelers on a Swan Hellenic (Commack, NY; 877/800-7926, www.swanhellenic.com) cruise, and the rest of the 600 passengers ...
Imagining a Nobel experience in Stockholm
Features, October 2006 issue
by Jennifer Petoff, Blue Bell, PA As a scientist, I have always been enamored with the Nobel Prize. There is a certain magic associated with these elite awards and the pomp and circumstance that goes along with them. Sweden’s own Alfred Nobel, a fellow chemist and a pioneer in the field of explosives, left funding for prizes in ...

All Aboard! » Finland’s King’s Road West
All Aboard, March 2006 issue
by Jay Brunhouse Pilgrims, royal couriers, soldiers, merchants, postmen and even Czar Alexander I trudged along the muddy, medieval path that connected Stockholm through southern Finland with St. Petersburg. It has become known as Finland’s King’s Road because the crown maintained it. The Russian emperor traveled in an ermine fur-lined sledge from Turku to Helsinki with ...
Six hotels in Germany
Accommodations Worldwide, February 2004 issue
We can highly recommend these six hotels from our August-September ’02 trip to GERMANY. All were in the “Quite Comfortable” category (single little house icon) in the Michelin Red Guide. All had large rooms and immaculate bathrooms. All except Studtmann’s Gasthof offered a bountiful buffet breakfast. All provided free parking. Reservations were made via e-mail. • ...
