There is a company in New York - Travltips Freighter and Cruises (www.travltips.com/) the books freighter trips all over the world. I've traveled with them once, to Antarctica, on a cruise shop and found them reliable with knowledgeable agents. India can be tricky though. I was in India myself in 2012 and contacted many cargo ship companies requesting a ride to Sri Lanka. I had to give up in the end.
