Warning on Haiti

From the August 2012 issue.

In recent months, some travelers arriving in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on flights from the US were attacked and robbed shortly after departing the airport. At least two US citizens were shot and killed in these incidents.

US citizens have been victims of violent crime, including murder and kidnapping, predominantly in the Port-au-Prince area. No one is safe from kidnapping, regardless of nationality, race, gender or age.

The US Department of State points out that hundreds of thousands of people safely visit Haiti each year but cautions travelers about the island’s lack of adequate infrastructure, particularly in medical facilities. Also, the ability of authorities to respond to emergencies is limited and in some areas nonexistent.
