On São Miguel, Azores, the Furnas Valley is covered with geysers and thermal pools. We watched as our lunch of cozido (stew) was cooked in the ground by geothermal energy, then we drove to the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel (www.jpmoser.com/terra_nostra_garden_hotel-r.html) where it was served to us in grand style. There were fantastic botanical gardens and a hot spring swimming pool. I would certainly recommend this idyllic spot. Rooms are €83.50-€141 ($123-$203) for a double, depending on the season. — CAROLE WARDELL, Spring Valley, NY
I never ever pack anything of value in checked luggage. That is the best idea. The second is don’t check at all; use only carry-on. One needs only to pack wisely and take adequate detergent. This has worked well for me in various oddball countries. — BARBARA FELTON, Pocatello, ID
I thought there could not be any falls to compete with Iguazú in either Argentina or Brazil, but Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe make a good case for a tie. They are not as wide as Iguazú — about 1.5 miles as opposed to 3.1 — but the falls are equally high (about 300 feet each), the Zambezi River provides more water and the “climax” fall is beyond spectacular. I visited in September. — R.G. ARMSTRONG, Rocklin, CA
