I was scheduled to depart June 30, ’05, for a “Thorsmork Riding Tour,” which was to be five days of riding with a herd of Icelandic horses. I had made my flight and trip plans through Holly Nelson and Brad Vogel, owners of Horses North, LLC, aka Iceland Adventure, LLC (P.O. Box 475, Millerton, NY 12546; phone 888/686-6784 or visit www.horsesnorth.com or www. icelandadventure.com).
A little less than $3,000 would cover the nonstop Minneapolis-Reykjavik flight, an extra night at a hotel in Reykjavik and the 6-day tour, which would include lodging, food, horses, equipment and airport/hotel transportation.
On June 25 I was involved in a car accident. After having x-rays, I was told I had a bruised bone in my left hand. They put a splint on it, but I decided to check with my family doctor to make sure everything was okay for the trip and ended up seeing her on June 29. Not good news. A technician had reread my x-ray and noticed I had a small bone broken below the thumb. No trip, no horses, just visits to a specialist to put my hand in a cast plus calls to insurance adjusters, filling out forms, etc.
I was very disappointed about not going on my Icelandic excursion. I also was concerned as I did not have trip-cancellation insurance. I called Holly the next morning (I was to have left that night). She and I talked about several options and finally Holly said, “Let’s reschedule your trip for September, as I know you really want to ride the horses.”
I was astounded that this could be done and was concerned about cost, etc. Holly assured me that because this is a very busy season in Iceland, she would not have any trouble rescheduling my Icelandair ticket (I did need a doctor’s excuse), the hotels and the horse trip.
My bone is healing, my car is fixed, and now I have a trip to Iceland to look forward to. Kudos to Holly Nelson for taking that extra step!
