Cairnbrae House, North Island, New Zealand

My husband and I took a NEW ZEALAND vacation in March ’04 that focused on their national parks. At Tongariro National Park, we decided against staying at the Grand Chateau within the park (small, dark, overheated rooms) and instead stayed in the nearby town of Ohakune.

We spent the night at the beautiful and well-appointed Cairnbrae House (140 Mangawhero Rd., Ohakune, North Island, New Zealand; phone [06] 385 3002, e-mail peterm@cairnbraehouse.co.nz) and absolutely loved it!

The home owners were friendly and gracious and had many suggestions for hiking trails, etc. The family does have pets (not allowed upstairs), and a small deer enclosure adjoins the property.

Our room’s balcony had an unobstructed view of snow-covered Mt. Ruapehu, and we have a great photo of a full moon rising behind the mountain. Prices started at NZ$160 (US$101). You can even opt to join your hosts for a gourmet dinner with wine.
