Places to stay in Scotland: Highland House Hotel, ButtonBoss Lodge

From the February 2004 issue.

For those traveling to Scotland, here are some great places that we used on our trip in November ’03.

Highland House Hotel (South Church St., Callander, Perthshire FK17 8BN; U.K.; phone 01877 330 269, fax 01877 339 004 or e-mail highland [dot] house [dot] hotel [at] lineone [dot] net). Owners: Lorna and Robert Leckie.

This is a spotless, immaculate, quiet, small hotel with a B&B flavor. Highly recommended. A twin room with facilities en suite cost £44 ($75) including breakfast.

It’s on a side street with parking in the small village of Callander (of Rob Roy notoriety), near Trossachs National Park. Close by Doune Castle (“Monty Python” fame), Dunblane Cathedral, Drummond Castle (closed in winter), Loch Lomond and Stirling with all its delights.

ButtonBoss Lodge (25 Atholl Road, Pitlochry, Perthshire PH16 5BX, U.K.; phone/fax 01796 472 065, e-mail colin@buttonboss. fsnet.co.uk or visit www.s-h-systems. co.uk/hotels/buttonbo.html).

In the delightful Victorian village of Pitlochry, this B&B is in a wonderful location across from the tourist info office. On a main street with lots of restaurants, etc., close by, this is a clean establishment that’s quiet at night and has its own car park.

Owners Colin McKay, a golf pro, and Marleen, his Dutch wife, speak four languages and offer unwavering hospitality. We had a delightful stay. Highly recommended. A twin, en suite, cost £36 ($61) per night, with breakfast.

There’s a theater in this Highland town, plus lots of shops. It’s close to the Pass of Killiecrankie, Blair Castle (closed in winter), Saint Andrews, Dundee, Perth, Scone Palace (closed in winter), several distilleries and the Crannog Centre.

Plockton Inn (Innes St., Plockton, Ross-shire IV52 8TW, U.K.; phone 01599 544 222 or fax 01599 544 487). Owners Kenny, Mary and Susan Gollan were friendly and efficient.

In gorgeous little Plockton, near Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye Bridge, this is a wonderful, old, quaint hotel with a car park. A twin, en suite, cost £50 ($85) with breakfast (off-season rate).

It was very clean and quiet, with an excellent restaurant and bar. Tea was offered upon our arrival. Dinner with two glasses of wine was £26.70 ($45).

We found the Plockton Inn very quaint and inviting and much better than staying on Skye in off-season! The owners here are much nicer than at the other hotels in town. If you are going to Plockton, stay here!
